The Accident

Saint Vaast La Hougue, a very pretty port in Normandy closed its lockgates before low tide as every day. Saint Colomban arrived shortly after and thus had to anchor near the port for the night.
At two o'clock in the morning, the "Petit Ange", a 25 ton fishing boat came out of the port. The automatic pilot was turned on right away and no one was watching ahead of the boat going 9 knots. Unfortunately, Saint Colomban was in its way.

The crash was terrible. Hit on the portside, just at the back of the roof, the hull couldn't resist to the shock. The bows of the "Petit ange" penetrated all the way through the deck and into the roof, cutting the quarterberth in two. Tons of water were coming in very fast though the big hole. The fisherman offered to tow Saint Co to the port, but the skipper didn't have time to take out any of the chain before the ship sank completely. Saint Colomban's crew climbed on the fishing boat, noone got hurt except Saint Colomban which now layed under several meters of water.
During the day, the ship was taken out. It was raised using baloons filled with air and towed to the quay where a crane took it out very carefully.

Damages
  • Hole in the hull : 1m by 1m50
  • left side of the cockpit destroyed
  • The back of the roof on the port side torn away.
  • All the interior covered by the motor's gasoil which leaked out of the tank.
  • Electric circuit out of order.

A renowned shipyard evaluated the repairs to 350.000 Francs which was the value of the boat. After two years of trials the insurance finally payed the amount to Saint Colomban's proprietor. He had several offers to buy the wreck, including one from Ludo. Pierre-Yves finally decided to sell him his ship, and the big adventure began for Askoy and Ludo.
